Lucky Connection

I really love photographing geography and landcape photography takes me back to my original love of the art sometimes.  This is one of those times.  Yesterday my wife and I flew from Indianapolis to Austin with a connecting flight in Phoenix.  At first, I thought this would be quite an annoyance as Phoenix is very much out-of-the-way but it turned out to be a great photo-op.  I’ve only been out to this area of the country once before, and it was by bus.  Seeing the desert and mountains from above gives everything a much different look.  I’ve had the pleasure of photographing from a plane in the past, and it turns out that the window seat of a commercial airliner and an iPhone go hand-in-hand.

Lookout Mountain

These are all images of Kingsland, Texas. It’s near where I work and I shot these the other day on my lunch break. I took these pictures during this last week of December, since the weather has been so mild and nice lately.

Happy New Year!

The streets are empty

I feel bad not having updated this in quite some time. I get a nice momentum going, and then life steps in the way. Whether that step is a busy job keeping me busy during the time that I would normally be out shooting or simply having other tasks that needed attended to, it’s time to get back at it. Having this as an outlet to post images and design work, I love keeping this as up-to-date as possible.

This is a series of images that I took yesterday (Dec. 25) morning before the streets filled up with cars and traffic and the daily routine. This shows the city in a much quieter moment when the hustle of everyday life is briefly paused.

It’s a nice morning

I’ve wanted to make some pictures from this area before, but I haven’t had the chance until this morning. This is the Pennybacker bridge or aka the Austin 360 bridge, as it spans part of Lake Travis coming into town on highway 360. I want to go back and photograph it at night because there are no lights on the bridge and it looks very nice moonlight with the cars going across.

I was glad that I woke up early today on my day off and rode the motorcycle up to this cool spot. The tree image is from the viewpoint of the bridge photo as well.

And here it is at night:

Portland, Maine: Memorial Day Weekend 2011

Here is a photo essay of my trip to Portland, Maine this past weekend. I went to photograph a wedding, and these are the images from trekking around the city the day before the main event. It was over-cast and foggy much of the time I was there, but I like the way these images turned out with the soft light.

This is the view from my hotel window on the ninth floor. It looked like this every morning.

This a plate of apple fritters and a mimosa served for brunch after the rehearsal for the wedding Saturday morning. I also had a delicious spinach and goat cheese frittata.

All the rest of the images are from walking around and shooting the daily happenings of Memorial Day weekend in Portland.

And lastly, this is a view of the hotel I stayed in, the Eastland in downtown Portland. The circle is marking my room.

Austin Time Lapse

I love time lapse photography and this is a little project I did using Austin as my subject.

Fat Tuesday, Austin Style

Austinites really know how to party. I went downtown to Sixth street last night to document the happenings of Fat Tuesday. People packed the street and loud rhythmic drum beats and music came out of the front doors and open windows of the many bars and restaurants lining the thoroughfare. Police stood guard and watched as the mass of people moved from place to place stopping to trade beads for quick glimpses of some women showing their chests for the shiny reward. Bright lights, the aroma’s of food vendors on the street and the smell of alcohol permeated the air as people continued to celebrate into the early morning hours. These images are from about midnight until 1:45am.

Hopefully it won’t take me as long to update this in the future!

Shiner, Texas and the likes

Yesterday I had the pleasure of going to Shiner, Texas with my gal-pal Candace to visit the Spoetzl Brewery where they brew Shiner beer. The tour of the facilities isn’t the best brewery tour I’ve been on by far, but you do get to try four different 8oz pours of the various beer they have for the time. My favorite yesterday was the Shiner 102, an anniversary brew only made for 2011.

The brewery was also not open to photography, so I couldn’t shoot inside which is a little disappointing too. Overall it was a nice little day adventure that we enjoyed, and here are some of the pictures along the way and back home.

This is the outside of the brewery:

This is Friday’s Fried Chicken. It was recommended by the tour guide, but she must be on the payroll because it wasn’t that good. Maybe I should have ordered the catfish po’ boy instead of the fried chicken.

I spotted this flame out in a field while we were en route home to Austin. I thought it was an oil pump, but it turned out being natural gas. Having said that, there are many small oil rigs pumping through this area.

Came across this guy while photographing the gas flame. He was curious to see people I think.

The overcast sky let in some blue as we neared Austin, and the fields lit up golden brown under the clouded Texas sky.

This is a nice trip to take if you have a day off and you just want to try something different.

That’s it!

Austin in black and white…

I went out to photograph Austin at night last night, and came back with some nice shots. I love shooting at night and being able to photograph architecture is one of my favorite things too. I hope you like them!

This is the Austin skyline facing north.

This is the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long Center for the Performing Arts.

This is a view of South Congress Avenue from the underside of the bridge.
